Hi all, traveling to Italy & Paris in Oct. Am currently using a Metro PCS phone. I am not looking to use it for calls, texts, or data..just for WiFi. Anyone have any experience with this? Having a hard time getting an answer from Metro. Will only be in paris for 2 nights, so much more worried about Italy.
If the question is can you use your phone while in Europe while using wifi (hotels, cafes, etc.). Then probably yes. I know of no phones that only work with cellular data. Or perhaps you question is can you use your phone as a hot spot to provide data to a tablet or laptop?
Does Metro PCS offer a "WiFi Calling feature?" That is, if you are in the US in some remote area without T-Mobile service (T-Mobile owns Metro and uses T-Mobile's network), can you get on WiFi and make/receive calls? I used to be able to do that with my T-Mobile phone. If you can use WIFi calling, it should work anywhere, not just in the US. But your phone itself must support the "WiFi Calling" feature. My old Android phone did; my newer one did not, so even though T-Mobile allowed it, I could not use it because of my phone.
You can certainly use it for non-calling: web browsing, etc. while on WiFi in Europe. That I know will work. Making actual mobile calls on European mobile networks? Probably not. You could also buy a local SIM card in Europe if the phone is unlocked to get mobile data when not on WiFi. (Very handy for Google Maps - I wouldn't be without it anymore myself, actually.)
If you have a smart phone, you can install Google Hangouts to make free calls home to the US, even to landlines, while on WiFI. You can install it now in the US and try it. It works the same in Europe but you must add the US calling code - put +1 in front of any US number you are calling while in Europe.
Thanks! I do have WiFi calling on my phone, and have Google Hangouts! I really just need to know if the WiFi will work, not trying to set up a hot spot or anything. I've also heard the What's App app works over there too. So if I just turn my data off the WiFi will still work? That's awesome. Didn't want to have to buy an Italian phone. Not worried about calls/texts, more about Google Maps and info on places I'm visiting. I want to be able to access the website from my hotel.
lauren,
Wi-Fi is not dependent on any particular cell network. If the phone is configured with the necessary Wi-Fi frequencies (which it probably is), it will work with Wi-Fi anywhere. What type of phone is it?
One point to note however, is that you'll probably find that Wi-Fi service works well in some places and is "spotty" in others. In Italy you'll likely have to get a password from the desk staff, and log-in before you'll be able to access it. You may have to log-in each day.
We take our Samsung6 phones and have AT&T put the service on vacation hold so there is no calling, text or data -- but they work fine on hotel WiFi. Of course, sometimes we have to go to the lobby or the breakfast room to get WiFi connection.
I have an Android, ZTE is the brand. Good to know I can still access WiFi over there with my phone! Thanks all!
