In the Trastevere, most places spilled into the streets due to covid. There are any number of places, but if we wanted a great meal with a wide selection and some special items, we went to La Scala in Trastevere. They have a nice area outdoors, if sitting outside is a must, then I would make a reservation. Tried to find a website to link, know I have been on it...might want to verify.

Not a trattoria, but Ristorante Le Terme di Diocleziano, Via del Viminiale 3/A. Good food, great service. They also have interior seating, and a rooftop bar, but when we were there in May, we ate outside, in front of the restaurant, twice. And we were welcome to stay as long as we wanted, even when we didn't have a reservation.

In the city centers of touristic cities like Rome there is no more difference between restaurant and trattorias, it's just marketing.
Read the menus posted outside and pick those places offering only a few, local, dishes per course; regardless what's written on the sign.

Even those writing the Osterie Slow Food Guide have given up in Rome and list places like Armando al Pantheon.
Anyway this is the full Slow Food 2021 list:
Augustarello
Da Armando al Pantheon
Da Enzo al 29
Da Cesare
Epiro
Flavio
Grappolo d’Oro
L’osteria di Birra del Borgo
Osteria di Monteverde
Tavernaccia
Lo Steria
Menabò Vini e Cucina
Osteria del Borgo
Osteria del Velodromo vecchio
Osteria dell’Angelo
Pennestri
Proloco D.O.L
Proloco Trastevere
Roberto e Loretta
Santo Palato
L’Avvolgibile
Trecca

In Rome last fall (in what I now think of as the good old days when covid numbers were low and people eating indoors had to show they were vaxxed and staff wore masks and super-cautious people like me felt very safe in restaurants in Italy), we greatly enjoyed Trattoria Antico Falcone. Near the Trionfale market and Bonci's bakery at Via Trionfale, 60.

I just now went and read the most recent bad reviews by Italians online (one of the things I do when checking out a place to eat) and it sounds to me as though the restaurant has had its highs and lows and changes of management over the years. Maybe new management recently? We are darned picky and we liked it and we seemed to be the only non-Italians in the whole room. Anyway, you will need a reservation, especially to eat outside.

Carlo Menta restaurant in Trastevere has outdoors sitting and food is decent.

If you are looking forward to dining "AL FRESCO" then you need to go to Regina Coeli, the State Penitentiary in Rome located in Trastevere. Maybe many Americans don't know, but "AL FRESCO" is Italian slang for "in the slammer" (in prison), so not exactly the same usage as in English. In Italian you would say 'mangiar fuori' (to eat outside) or all'aperto (outdoors)

We ate at Da Meo Patacca in Trastevere. It was where lot of locals go, with live music. We ate outdoors and food and ambiance was lovely. My family enjoyed it immensley. The prices were reasonable and food was very good. Check out the website. You will not be disappointed.
