Anyone have experience with tourist medical services in Florence? Recommendations?

I'm in Florence for the first time ever and have been ill for 5 days now, not getting better. Anyone have any suggestions based on personal experience of how I might proceed towards medical care?

Thank you!

I haven't needed medical care in Florence, but in Rome, I had to go to the emergeny room once. I have also needed doctors occasionally. If you are staying at a hotel, the desk can refer you to a doctor in a clinic, private practice, or at a pharmacy (depending on what you need), they will know English-speaking doctors. If you think you need to go to an emergency room, go.

If your concern is insurance, that depends on your policy, probably based on reimbursement. I was handed the entire bill at the end of my visit, and paid by credit card. It was much less than comparable care in the US.

Thank you. It has not yet reached "emergency care" status, but I'd like to see someone before it does. There are all sorts of listings online, but no one answers. Not sure what to think. Here is one that I had great hopes for, but cannot raise anyone at the number: http://www.medicalservice.firenze.it/
Thanks again

We were in Florence with friends and my friend is on a blood thinner, she was trying to manage her levels because of some procedure she had before we left. She talked to our hotel and they sent her to the "hospital" which could of been a clinic for that type of thing. They took her blood and gave her the results. She could then call her Dr in the US with the levels and do what he said. When she asked them about paying they said that there was no charge because we had some type of agreement with Italy. I don't know if she had to show her passport, but I am sure she had an order from the US Dr. l always say ask your hotel first. Some countries have Dr's that make calls to hotels for travelers.

Thanks very much for the responses everyone .. very much appreciated.
Since it is a Saturday I was unable to connect with a clinic .. and tomorrow they are closed. There is a good one right near the Uffizi and other 'hot-spots' in downtown, but, again, very limited hours on Saturday. Closed on Sunday. I'll just have to nurse myself along until Monday(!)
I am not at a Hotel -- I'm at an airbnb little mini apartment. (TRULY 'mini' .. smallest place I've ever stayed in my life). Airb seems to be 'taking over' the traveler scene -- I have mixed feelings about it but I am giving them a go this trip for the first time. An interesting way to go, but not without difficulty.
Now, looking at proceeding onward to Paris, I'm quite nervous -- their air quality (negative) numbers have gone through the roof of late .. and they even 'enjoyed' the position of being the dirtiest city on the planet for a time a week or two ago. So, on top of being ill, I'm not relishing breathing extremely dangerous air for a week or more. We'll see.
Here's a good local medical attention for tourists source that I found -but, again, missed their Saturday times and then when I got through they were out on housecalls which is common here!

And sad Paris news on pollution if anyone's interested:

aa,

I hope you're starting to feel better. The comprehensive list that Laurel provided should help you to easily find a Physician.

For future reference, you might have a look at IAMAT which provides a network of clinics and Physicians in many places in the world.

Hopefully one of the Physicians here on the Forum will spot this Thread as I'm sure they'll be able to offer some good advice. It seems a bit odd that whatever is affecting you has been lingering for five days or more.

In most cases (unless it is bad enough to need an ambulance), the first place to go is a pharmacy. They are qualified to judge whether it is something they can deal with, of whether you need a doctor; and if so they can give you the address of one.
If there is no-one there who speaks English (unlikely, but it may be school-English), they can find a pharmacy or doctor who does.
There is in many cities a rota of one pharmacy that is open on Sundays,
Explain your symptoms in simple English, with pointing and gestures, and that should work.

Asking for an English speaking doctor can get you routed to extra expensive private clinics.
Best wishes, get well soon.

I am so sorry to hear that you've been ill for 5 days now and are not getting better.
This is every traveler's worst nightmare, getting sick in Europe.
I hope you are feeling better soon, so that you can continue to enjoy your trip.
Best wishes,
Kent

If you need a doctor at times when doctors are not available (Saturday afternoon, Sunday and festivities) you may try to call the Guardia Medica (number and addresses, according to the zone where you are located, are at http://www.asf.toscana.it/index.php?option=com_content&id=55:guardia-medica-di-firenze - I guess some proficiency in Italian could be appreciated). Or you may go to an hospital emergency room - the most central is at S. Maria Nuova, via Bufalini in the Duomo area; but if your condition is not serious be ready for a long wait (very sick people are treated first, regardless of arriving order).
