Anyone ever stay in a convent?

Wondering if anyone has tried the various convents available in Italy. We have a family of 5 and thought this might be an option. We would do 2 rooms, a double and a triple.
Thanks ;-)

Yes, I have stayed at one in Venice twice. Booked through https://www.monasterystays.com/. Simple accommodations. Decent breakfast. Refrigerator for shared use. Good wifi. Minimal toiletries (as in liquid soap in dispenser in the shower). Hand towel and bath towel provided. Don’t expect front desk with concierge service.

Each one is different and may have different rules. Make sure to check if there is a curfew. Check if wifi is available throughout the entire property or only in “public” areas. Also check if bathrooms are en suite or shared.

Yes, years ago, we stayed at convent in Fiesole. It was simple but comfortable. Had an amazing view over Florence. Access back and forth to Florence was easy by public bus.

Yes, three times, Salzburg, Florence and Rome. Austere single room, but clean and comfortable with en-suite bathroom. I book direct with the monastery after researching on Monastery.Com. And received better extended stay rates and cancellation terms. If the monastery doesn't have its own online reservation site, email your reservation requests to them.

We stayed at Casa il Rosario near the Colosseum. We would definitely stay there again. It was inexpensive enough that we got our junior hi daughter her own connecting room.

I have stayed at convents in Venice and Florence. In Florence, I returned to the same convent three different years. The last visit was in the winter and it was so cold in the room, I had to move to a proper hotel down the street! I recall there was not air conditioning in the summer the first year I was there. So, be sure to check for a/c if you are traveling in the summer. As others here have said, rooms are basic. No television, and wifi in the public area only. There was always someone around who spoke english, and everyone was always helpful. Just be sure to check before booking for the amenities that you require. I always booked directly with the convent, either by email or phone.

We (2) stayed in the Alma Domas in Siena, Italy, many years ago. It's run by nuns like a hotel and is next to the San Domenico Church. Like a convent, it had hours when the doors were closed (10pm to 7am, I think) and the nuns didn't speak English. We enjoyed it. It was cheap, clean, and centrally located. I don't remember whether the bathrooms were shared down the hall.

Like Leonard, I stayed in the Alma Domus in Sienna many years ago. It is not a convent, but a hotel run by the Sisters. My room was simple and clean, but very comfortable with a full private bathroom and a beautiful view of the Duomo.

I had an early bus to catch, and although the main door is locked at night, the Sisters showed me how to open the door in the morning.

we stayed at the Don Orione in Dorsoduro in Venice. Absolutely fine in all respects. Some years ago so not a particularly recent review.

My experience with the three monasteries I referred to above is that all had TVs, WiFi, elevators, en-suite baths. All but Salzburg had adequate a/c; Salzburg had room fans but the room cooled down at night so I didn’t use. My room in Rome and Florence overlooked the courtyard. All were walking distance to major sightseeing. None had curfews. Florence had the least variety for breakfast but the breakfast room is next to the chapel so listening to morning vespers and the nuns lovely voices were a treat.

As for Venice, I have a favorite small B&B I stay at. Unfortunately it doesn’t meet your room criteria, double but no triple unless they have a cot.

Istituto San Guiseppe in Venice. Halfway between Rialto bridge and San Marco, on a canal. We pucked up a gondola there. No breakfast but grocery nearby. Will be staying for a second time later this year. Booked via monasterystays.com ( easiest method ) first time, directly this time ( cheaper )
