Anyone ever been to Elba??

I will be spending time in Florence/Siena this summer and would possibly like to visit the Island of Elba and the port city of Piombino. Has anyone visited either and if so, do you have any suggestions as to where to stay? I do not have a car.

We stayed on Elba in early Sept 2010, at the Hotel Antares in Capoliveri. Still talk about the fabulous dinners and the warmth of the water; it's on our list to return and would definitely stay there again. They mentioned that we were only the second Americans to stay there! For this trip, we'd rented a car although we usually take trains, as our itinerary was up the coast from Rome to Genoa and the stops we wanted were not well-served by train. You may find that coming from Tuscany there is a train to Piombino. We took the car on the large ferry from Piombino, which was easy and not too expensive, and it was about a half-hour drive once we landed, to Capoliveri. If you research the different towns on Elba depending on your interests, you'll find the best one for you.

Thank you for your reply. I will research the towns in Elba. From what I'm seeing, I think I can reach Piombino by train only through Pisa and then take a ferry to Elba.

Hi Angelina We are traveling from Rome, through Tuscany and eventually up to Lake Como. We will be renting a car only in the Tuscany area so we can travel on our own timetable. While reading about the Tuscany area, I came across what looks like this beautiful Island, Elba. I would love to hear more about it. We would love the chance to swim in an Ocean besides the Atlantic and Pacific. Should we go to Elba, we would probably then head North to CT on our way to Lake Como. I see you rented a car and took it on the ferry. I read another person's info and they said car rental companies do not allow their cars to be taken on the ferry. What city/town did you get your car? Any issues about taking it on the ferry? If we arrive one day mid day and spend two nights, leaving one full day, will that be enough time to see the island and enjoy the Ocean? I would appreciate any info you may wish to share about Elba. Thank you,
Sharon
