anyone driven these routes?

I am still working on our month long trip to Italy. We will be staying in Kobelstein, Bolzano for three nights. Then we plan to drive to Mantua to see some of the sights there. After that we will drive to Trezzo Sull Adda where we will stay for the night. This is northeast of Milan, halfway to Bergamo. From there we plan to drive to Bergamo for the day. After seeing the upper town we then want to take our car back to the rental place at the airport and take the train into Milan where we will stay for two more days. The third night we will stay at a hotel near the airport before leaving for the U.S. Has anyone driven in this area and if so is it possible to do as I have outlined.? The travel time from Oberbolzen to Mantua is about two hours on rome2rio.com and the drive from Mantua to Trezzo Sull Adda is about 1 hour 50 minutes. I want to get rid of the car before we see Milan which I have been to before so I don't plan on doing the Duomo and the Galleria area. Any suggestions for this part of my trip?

Which airport in Milan? We found it easier to pick up and drop off cars at nearby Linate. It was a short taxi ride to our hotel.

We arrange our cars by calling up the broker Autoeurope; get zero- deductible collision, which covers any damage to the body of the vehicle. They will recommend the best agency based on your particular situation; possibly where the car is being returned.

Read this about driving in Italy and restrictions involved [ZTLs]; avoid leaving anything of value in a car when parked:

Be sure to get the IDP. Route planning on www.viamichelin.com.

Purchase 2 bus tickets/pp from the shop in the Bergamo station, then walk straight out to the bus stop and board the one to Alta [#1]. Going up the hill you will pass the funicular on the left at the bottom of Alta. You will ride that going back down--walking back to the station or taking a bus from a stop further down.

Getting off the bus you will be above Alta. There is a free funicular across the street, going further up for some nice views and a little park. Then work your way down through town to the funicular, using the other ticket [not sold on the bus].

Walking down to Città Bassa is nice too: down to Sant'Alessandro St. through to Via XX Settembre and then to Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII at the end of which you'll find the railway station.

Route planning on viamichelin.com, not other sites. Note time estimates "off the motorway."

I would discuss the rental with and AutoEurope rep; rate difference returning the car at the BGY airport before visiting Bergamo. Bus #1 originates there. At he station you would get off and store your bags before continuing on.

Our preferred Malpensa Hotel is the Villa Malpensa, with its very good restaurant; 15 minutes to the terminal on their shuttle.
