The big city in Piemonte is Torino, which has nice museums and a wonderful riverside park. We were there in summer of 2006. As to your other place, we would recommend Bolzano, in Alto Adige, the next further north province. This city is in foothills of the Alps. has the "Iceman" in its museum and, bcuz it was once Austria, has much more Germanic than Italian flavor.

I enjoyed Stresa nr lago maggiore. I have visited Torino but found it to be just a large italian city except that 1X per 10 years visitors can see the shroud of Christ. We traveled around Asti, Alba area and while it is a well known area for Barollo wines and we stayed at a wonderful place for relaxing and swimming the general area to me does not merit much for a sight seeing tourist (I have vacationed in Italy 4X in 6 yrs.hope this helps.
