We fly into Rome in the morning and would like to spend a few hours i We fly into Rome and would like some ideas to relax a little before heading to our B&B early evening in Orvieto. We rest pretty well on the plane and hope to spend the day in Rome. It is the St.Peter's holiday (Wednesday), so a tour of the Vatican will have to wait for the planned return to Rome on theweekend. We thought perhaps an hour or so to "recover" and perhaps tour the Forum/Colesseum. Any suggestions?
Are you taking the train to Orvieto from Roma Termini? If so, you could take a little stroll over to the Vittoriano monument, walk up to the Campidoglio, go up the Rome from the Sky elevator for amazing views of Rome, then head back to the train station. Lots of places between the two to have a gelato or a glass of wine. Personally, I'd go directly to Orvieto and relax there.
I found Rome to be a lot of things, but relaxing it was not! I found it to be noisy and chaotic. The closest I found to a peaceful and relaxing place was the park (can't remember the name) where the Borghese Gallery is. Frankly, I find that 'relaxing' when I first arrive is a big no - no. I keep moving until bedtime or I will want to sleep. I agree that if you want to relax, go straight to Orvieto.
I guess I should rephrase the question. Thanks for the helpful replies. We hope to check out the Forum & Colliseum that day and thought there might be a recommendation to transition from plane/airport - perhaps just grab a nice meal & then start touring? We definitely plan to relax at our B & B in Orvieto. It's so close now we can hardly stand it!
I'd take the train to Termini, store your bags at the station, and stroll down Via Cavour until it dead ends into the forum. On your left will be a row of cafes, some of them serving cafe and pastries for breakfast. These aren't the best places in Rome for food quality but they are good and the view is amazing from the outdoor seating. My husband and I rented an apartment a block away and ate in the area a few times. It was always a 'pinch me, I'm in Rome' experience. Plus you are right next to the entrance to the forum (unless they moved it again) and the coliseum is just a block away. Have a blast!
