Google Maps can show you hotels, proximity to a train station, and some town photos. I don't know the area, but might try Santa Marinella, for one possibility that is served by train and fairly close to your final destination. Train travel requires going from the airport into Rome and back out again. Rick estimates that a taxi from the airport to Civitavecchia costs about €120 or www.airportshuttle.it can be a little cheaper.

Ostea Antica is wonderful but will want a lot of time.

Hullo John,
The first thing that comes to my mind is the amazing Etruscan Necropolis in Cervetery, known as "La Banditaccia": imagine a funerary site filled with grass-roofed monumental tombs : one would take it for a hobbit town didn't you know it actually is a necropolis.
This is google+ page for the Necropolis
But the direction are not very clear there, you may want to check this Civitavecchia Tourist info page, maintened by the local community and therefore quite reliable.

Other very nice places in the area, but you should have the whole day at least to visit them properly as they are not exactly next to the airport highway are: Bracciano Lake or the Santa Severa Castle, also known as Odescalchi Castle, right on S.Severa beach, where you can spend very enjoyable hours (although it is absolutely packed during summer, let's say June to September) and visit a nicely instructive museum of navigation.

Hope this could help. If you have any further question please DM me.
Cheers
Javier

I assume that your are going to Civit... to board a cruise ship. That is about the only reason to go to Civit... There is not a lot between them and no direct link other than a taxi or private driver. It is a decent ride, somewhat along the coast but not worth the price that a taxi or driver would charge. It you want to go early prior to your cruise then go to Rome for a couple of days. And then take the train to Civit... See RoninRome for detail directions for using the train to Civit...
