Any suggestions on filling in the gap in my itenerary?

April 5- Amsterdam, 3 nights
April 8- fly to Rome
April 9-10 Rome
Apr 11- Afternoon Rome train to Pisa. Pick up rental car and in-laws. Drive to Tuscany.
April 12-15 Tuscany Villa
April 16- Return car and in-laws to Pisa

April 16-19- where to go from here? Had thought Cinque Terra- I love ocean and beaches and coasts- would love to see this, but I can miss it if time is better spent in Florence or elsewhere. This will be my first trip in a long while that isn't centered around surfing. But if you tell me I can get guaranteed surfing in April in Italy...well maybe i would do that! No matter what we fly out of Florence on the 20th. I should mention the two kids- 4 and 9 traveling along too.

April 20- Fly Florence to Amsterdam
April 21- Fly home

I'd be surprised if there is surfing in Cinque Terre in mid-April.

With kids I would go to Venice. They will love it!
It is also easy to get to from Florence.

As you like the water take a family rowing lesson with www.rowvenice.com

Since you're dropping in-laws in Pisa. CT would be the logical choice. 50 min.train ride to LaSpezia, and then 8-28 minute trip to the village of your choice. Return to Florence 2H20min.

I too would choose Venice, especially with the kids. If you hit bad weather at the CT (a fairly likely possibility), there won't be anything to do, especially for the little ones. Even with good weather, the CT is an unremarkable beach, hiking trails (mostly moderate to strenuous), and shops and restaurants. Venice is canals, boats, bridges, lots more to capture the eyes and attention of youngsters.

I also agree with Venice, especially with kids! It is a magical place. You may not have the ocean, but you have the Grand Canal to cruise down. I love Cinque Terre, too, but the kids might get a little bored there.
