Any Suggestions for Perugia?

My fiancee & I are going to Italy this fall for our honeymoon and want to spend a bit of time in Umbria. I love Rick's book, but I must say I was disappointed that there was no mention whatsoever of Perugia! We're planning to stay in Orvieto and just do a daytrip there, so I'm just looking for a few recommendations of things to do/avoid/places to eat/etc. I'd also love to do a tour of ther Perugina chocolate factory, but I've had a hard time finding any info about it. Anybody have any suggestions?

I loved Pergia, more of a bigger town. I stayed in Montone/Umbertide for a month. It is beautiful but you will need a car. There are some small hotels right in the center of the small town. I would also recommend Gubbio, another small lovely town in Umbria. Umbria is what Tuscany was 10 years ago. I hope it stays that way but I doubt it.
Happy Travels!

You can find info online at their TI office, request brochures, etc. I remember our first visit -- you take the bus up from the train station (I've heard they have a tram now, too) and step off onto a huge piazza that stretches a few hundred yards with shops on either side as well as some restaurants with outdoor seating. Wonderful place! I haven't toured the chocolate factory but understand that its a few miles away from the hilltown and so you might have to take a taxi to it if you're traveling by train (and figure out how arrange a tour of the factory).

We spent a wk. at an agriturismo outside of Assisi, (which we had been to on another trip) and did daytrips around the region. We spent an afternoon in Perugia but we really enjoyed Gubbio, Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna and Todi, which is very lovely. We also spent a day visiting Civita and Orvieto. We have also used the Lonely Planet guidebooks along with R.S. books.

Several years ago we stayed for a week in Perugia at the Hotel Fortuna. We really enjoyed the city and did a few day trips to Assisi and Gubbio. I was especially interested in Gubbio. We took the funicular up to the top of some mountain. it is a great walking town. I thought Assisi was ok, but touristy.

Buon viaggio,
