We will be flying into Milan in early September and are looking for a reasonably priced hotel (if that exists in Milan!) (for 3 nights) in a safe and convenient area of the city. Thanks. Marie
Do you have obligations in Milan? With 3 nights, I'd get out to Verona or one of the lakes.
We are going to the lakes area (Varenna) for three days after Milan. We will actually only have two full days in Milan and have plans to see The Last Supper. We may also be meeting up with some people while we are there.
I have made plans to go to Milan in June. We're staying at the Regency: www.regency-milano.com/ I found it on Kayak.com Three nights for two, no breakfast, about $75 US per night. This place seems pretty nice and it's cheaper then any other 4 star hotel because it's not as close to the Duomo and main train station. However, I think the tram will make it all very accessible. There is a Tram from Piazza Firenze to the Duomo area. The Malpensa shuttle Bus will drop you near the convention center on Viale Teordorico, about 1/2 mile southwest of Piazza Firenze. That's closer to the Regency then the main train station.
Marie, I stayed in This Hotel on my last visit to Milan, and would certainly recommend it. It's in a convenient location to walk to the Duomo or Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele, and easy access to Cadorna station and Metro. However, I agree with the Guidebook that it would probably be best to get breakfast on Via Dante rather than at the Hotel. Happy travels!
We recently spent two days in Milan (March 10-11, 2011) and stayed at the Hotel Gran Duca di York (www.ducadiyork.com); it is also listed in Rick's Italy book and had very good reviews on Trip Advisor. It was not cheap (180 Euro/nt for a double room), but the rooms were spatious, spotless clean, quiet, and comfortable. They served an excellent breakfast (included in the price of the room) and had a very helpful staff. Location-wise, it is in the heart of the old city center literally across the street from the Pinoteca Ambrosiana and a 5-minute walk to the Duomo. Santa Maria delle Grazie (home of 'The Last Supper') was only about a 20-minute walk. We walked everywhere, including to dinner two evenings, and never felt that the area was unsafe. I don't think you could find a better location with regard to Milan's major sights. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.
Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. Marie
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Canada in Milano for a weekend in May 2010. It's a 3-star hotel, which I randomly found after much surfing. I booked months in advance, for 118 euros per night. Charming young staff; cozy breakfast room on lower level (breakfast included); 15-minute walk to Duomo; easy subway ride from train station and to Last Supper. Even an excellent restaurant recommendation provided (when we inquired) a short walk away from the hotel, for one of our dinners. We actually really enjoyed being in Milano for a couple of days, although it doesn't seem to rank highly as a tourist destination for some. Our other dinner was in the Brera student district---pizza, sitting outside practically on the street, with a marching band going by--loads of fun, as was my first encounter there with the hole-in-the-floor-two-porcelain-footprints toilet!
