My wife and I will be making our first visit to Rome in April. We keep hearing great things about the Monti neighborhood but have not seen many comments or recommendations for hotels there. Thinking about Residenze Argileto but haven't committed yet. Price range would be around $200-$250 a night.
I stayed at the Nerva Boutique Hotel back in October of 2015. I liked the hotel - clean, comfortable, nicely decorated room (a bit small, but that was fine for me, and I’m sure some of their rooms are larger), with an included breakfast with basics like croissants, coffee, etc. and a midday snack of sorts with light snacks and drinks. The hotel is a block or two off the main road, so relatively quiet, though cars tended to race up that street from time to time, so you had to be careful walking out the front door of the hotel. The streets surrounding the hotel were very charming and filled with lots of cute local shops and restaurants. The main road is of course filled with touristy restaurants and some souvenir shops, but it was relatively easy to find something else to eat or somewhere else to shop if you got off the main drag.
The hotel is an easy walk to the Colosseum and the Forum. I also walked to the Pantheon, Capitoline Museum, Trevi Fountain (although it was still under construction when I was there), and the Baths of Caracalla, but some of those were more like a 20 - 25 minute walk, so depends on how far you like to walk. I just checked, and I paid equivalent of $140 USD for a single room back then.
A few years ago we stayed at Nerva. I booked very far in advance and had good communication with the hotel. When we arrived we were put in a room that was not in the main hotel. We had to get the key, go outside, around the block and get into a building that was a residential building, not a hotel. The room was small and to get into the bed you couldn't stand straight up, the ceiling was lowered over the bed.
The building and room key were very large and heavy, which meant we were supposed to then go back to the main hotel around the block and turn the key in for the day and have breakfast. Best thing about the place was the cappuccino. They did make a good one.
Won't stay there again. Pain in the neck.
Check out Hotel Lancelot. Have stayed there twice since Nerva and so much better!!
