On June 1st I'll be driving through the area coming from the Alta Badia side up through Gardena Pass. It will be late afternoon. So before we head to our hotel in Selva I was wondering if we should take the opportunity to stop for dinner somewhere along that route? Maybe something in Alta Badia area or up in the Gardena Pass?

Late afternoon is not dinner time in Italy, it is aperitivo time. You could stop at the pass for coffee. The Rifugio Frari is there and likely open. Continue on to Selva (about 20 minutes further) and make a reservation for dinner at someplace that appeals to you. I have not had dinner in Selva (only in Ortisei and S. Cristina) so have no specific recommendation. Good restaurants seldom serve dinner before 7:30 although in the Val Gardena eating times tend to be earlier than in most of Italy.
