Any picnicking tips for Rome, Lucca, Cinque Terre, or Pisa?

This is my 2nd trip to Italy, but I missed out on picnicking last time. I read RS's picnic article, but wondered if anyone has more specific tips for the places I'm visiting? What did you do about cups if you drank wine etc? Was shopping at the market for small amounts pretty easy? Seems a bit overwhelming in his description....thanks!

We carry 17 oz. aluminum travel bottles (from camping stores) to picnic with. WalMart carries lemonades and instant tea mix envelopes in 17 oz. sizes. This is a substitute buying sodas that can be really pricey in Europe. We also carry retractable cups that fold down to about 1/2 inch thick and a good corkscrew for wine. My wife just doesn't like to drink wine out of a bottle. We do carry snack packages of peanut butter crackers, and they're sometimes a mini-meal. If you eat a big breakfast and picnic for lunch, little supper will be needed. We just don't eat as much as Italians at night.

We carry a flexible cutting board, pad ? About a foot or so square and rolls up to about the size of a paper towel core but critical for cutting cheese, meat, bread. Some handiwipes, a couple of zip lock plastic bags, folding cups that you can get in any outdoor store. Along the way may have grabbed packets of mustard, ketcup, mayo, etc. You do have to be careful about where you picnic. Rome has started a crack down on eating in public so it is only permitted in some areas.

Well since you guys are not metric yet( come on over to the dark side, lol ) i can give you these tips for purchasing small amounts of meat and cheese. A pound is about ( roughly) 1/2 a kilo. ( its actually 2.2 pounds to a kilo) 1/2 a kilo is about 500 grams.
For sandwiches 100 grams of sliced meat is a very generous man size sandwich,, I would use about 50- 60 grams myself depending on meat. Cheese can often be purchased by the slice,, if then I think 100-150 grams is enough for two sandwiches as an addition, depends on type of cheese. Often just saying you want enough of something for 2 people will work. 250 ml of fluid is one cup.

I don't know about spreading a blanket on the grass, but if you are just sitting on a bench, there shouldn't be any problem. Maybe be a little circumspect about the wine bottle. Look for the Despar supermarkets. They have sliced sandwich meats and cheeses prepackaged or you can have them slice as much as you want. They also have packaged salads. Some of them will also make sandwiches for you. You can also get small amounts of olives and vegetables, either pickled or in oil. And of course they have good selections of soft drinks and wines. Try some of the olive and pesto spreads in the little jars. You can also buy fresh fruit and vegetables - yes, even one apple or kiwi. BUT you have to weigh and label your purchases in the produce dept. before you get to the check-out counter. And they sell disposable cups, plates, cutlery, etc. Many hotels have plastic cups, either in the bathroom or with the mini-fridge.
