We've stayed in an agriturismo outside of Gubbio (Poggio Paradiso). Gubbio is in Umbria, though, not the Marches. It's an interesting town It's an interesting midieval town on its own and an OK base if you have a car. Plan on driving to tke you more time than you might exect - the roads are narrow and windy. Assissi is a good day trip.

We are planning on the Frassasi Caves, Urbino and Assisi as the main events in our three days in the area. Gubbio, although still in Urbino, was recommended as a good base. We will have a car! Thanks for your information.

Gubbio is not inside the Marche territory, Gubbio belongs to the Umbria Region.

Mary,
Gubbio is a small town in Umbria. It is really very
worthwhile and has some nice views. They have some cute stores, quite a bit of neat pottery. I would like to return some day. It was a day trip from Umbertide, also in Umbria, where we spent a month doing day trips all over Umbria and Tuscany. I
would also recommend Perugia, a bigger town.
I enjoyed very much. Hope this helps. Umbria is what
Tuscany was 10 years ago. Since you have a car, easily accessible.

Mary,

I too am planning 3 days/nights in the Le Marche area this October. Information on this region is a bit slim. We will be staying at the Locanda Valle Nuova (http://www.vallenuova.it/en/locanda/casa.htm) and will probably spend 1 day in the Gubbio/Caves area and 1 day in the Urbino area. Have you dug up any other good ideas/destinations? We targeted this region because the agritourismo looks amazing and the region looks like a true 'Back Door'.

The Touring Club of Italy publishes a guidebook called, "Le Marche," which is quite comprehensive. We got it from Amazon for around $20. After visiting the Frasassi Caves, we had a lovely meal at Le Copertelle in Serra San Quirico, not very far away.
