Any hidden gems on the Amalfi Coast for Honeymoon?

b/c, wow, July is an EXPENSIVE month.

even the mid-range rooms are in the mid $300's.

i think we may even be priced out of Positano. ~$2,500 for 5 nights is just a bit too rich for my blood.

kind of a bummer. i knew it'd be pricey but yikes.

Have you looked at La Bussola Hotel in Amalfi? I don't know your dates but I just pulled up a random date at about 250 euros for a class A room with sea view balcony & breakfast. A superior room with balcony was slightly less than 300 euros. We haven't been there in years but I remember it as a lovely hotel and my husband and I preferred Amalfi over Positano. Of course Positano is a short drive or bus ride away. One of my favorite travel experiences was being at the 9th century Amalfi cathedral during a Jubilee year mass and being led by a gorgeous priest down into the crypt of St. Andrew, where we were invited to touch the relic skull of the saint. It's one of the reasons I'm now Catholic.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Maybe Praiano or Minori?

Honestly, you may want to look for a different romantic spot . . . It will be really expensive and pretty crowded too.

There are no hidden gems on the Amalfi Coast because everyone will have already found them. July is busy and expensive, August even more so. Have you considered anywhere other than the Amalfi Coast? There are many romantic spots elsewhere in Europe which will be great in July and probably more romantic in being less crowded.

Try airbnb for apartment rentals. We like to stay in Ravello at Punta Civita. I think their honeymoon suite is around $150 per night.

Will you have a car? I stayed at La Maurella a few years ago, in Praiano, rooms face the sea, easy walk to the beach. Lower level of the town, parking onsite.

There are several towns close to the mainland, plus Atrani might hold appeal.
You could also look further south--the Cilento coast. Depends on what you were looking for.

i am undecided on a car. i have heard driving on the AC is miserable,
however the one hotel i am close to booking has free parking;

Imagine Jersey traffic, but 10 hours a day with only one narrow cliff road. That's your A.C. traffic in July.

Our advice is with good intent with a spot of humor. You still have time to find a good spot. Me? I'd look on the other side of the peninsula at a place called Vico Equense, maybe 15 km from Sorrento. It looked like it had wonderful views and vistas when we rode by on the bus to Naples airport this past March. Or still on the A.C but closer to Salerno, Vietri sul Mare.

Enjoy your planning!

You don't want to drive in July, particularly if budget is already a concern. You pay out the nose for parking (to go anywhere else), and you'll be sitting in traffic behind buses.

ALSO -- to advise on where to stay on the AC, we have to know what you want to be doing--i.e., sitting and enjoying the view or doing sight-seeing day trips. Transport is a huge factor here. It often helps to split your stay if you want to do both--a few days in an idyllic spot that you don't move from, and a few days in a transport hub (i.e., if you want to visit Pompeii, etc.).

Check out Hotel Certosa in Marina del Cantone. Tiny place on the peninsula south of Sorrento. Great hotel literally steps from the sea. We slept with French doors open on our balcony for the sounds of the sea. Several good restaurants, all a very short walk from hotel. Small beach. Good hiking opportunities.

We loved the fact that you can take boats from the dock in front of the hotel to Capri & Amalfi ... so no fighting traffic. There are buses to Sorrento where you can take train to Pompeii. We loved it.

My husband and I stayed at Rifugio degli dei in Positano (http://rifugiodeglidei.it/rates/) last September, and it was by far our favorite place over our 3 week trip in Italy/Germany. Breathtaking views, HUGE rooms (you basically get your own apartment), delicious breakfasts, and only €110 a night. Keep in mind that anywhere in Positano (and probably the entire Amalfi Coast for that matter) you'll go up/down many stairs to get anywhere, unless you stay at a 5* pricey hotel directly on the road. Rifugio degli dei does have a luggage lift, but you'll go up/down about two hundred stairs to get to the main road. My husband and I are in ok shape and younger, so it wasn't a big deal for us, and we actually found it romantic walking up the illuminated path by ourselves at night & looking out over the entire town. The b&b is also along the Path of the Gods (if you're in to hiking), and within walking distance of a beach.

In comparison, we were travelling with another couple that had a larger budget than us and stayed at Il San Pietro (room was over €700 per night). We visited their hotel & vice versa, and while their hotel was very nice and they had a private beach and lift, I personally liked the character and view (and price!) of our b&b much better... but that's just me.

hey all, i think we decided on Hotel Margherita in Praiano - unless there's a glaring issue with the choice ;)

I like your choice. I like it a lot.

I would upgrade to at least the 3rd-cheapest option, still not too bad price wise. Looks gorgeous. You'll be right where the peninsula juts out, in between Positano and Amalfi. Couldn't tell how close to the beach, the road, who cares--you're there!
