Hopefully all travellers in the Bologna / Modena / Ferrara area are safe & sound following the devastating 5.9 magnitude Earthquake which occurred this morning. According to news reports on TG1, the damage to some historic buildings appears to be substantial. At this point, at least three fatalities are confirmed.
Woke us up at 4am, the whole house was shaking pretty hard and it set off a few car alarms in our neighborhood. The news here is reporting 4 dead and over 50 injured so far.
Rik, Good to hear that you're safe. I'm still watching TG1 and the coverage appears to be "live" now rather than re-showing previous footage. The situation at the school in Brindisi seemed to be the top story yesterday. The past few days have not been good in Italy.
Thanks for the heads up, Ken. Glad you're OK Rik. Our original plans were to have flown to Venice today but two weeks ago changed to driving to Bavaria in July. Sorry for the loss, difficult for families. Its sad for the loss of architecture - . -
Glad to hear you're safe Rik. I felt some movement here in Cesena but thought I was dreaming and went right back to sleep.
Got an email from my sister (who is flying home today) that her husband felt the bed shake in their Venice hotel at 4 am. She checked internet and found the earthquake news. Here is a news link from the BBC. So very, very sorry for the families dealing with such sorrow today. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-18135898
Rik good to hear you are safe. From one who lives in the state that shakes hearing about loss of life due to a temblor is always sad. Thoughts and prayers for one and all.
