My favorite restaurant in Venice is a place called Alla Strega in Castello. Strega means witch in Italian so that's what the decor is. Many different varieties of pizza and calzones. Whenever we return to Venice, we head straight for Alla Strega. Last time, we ate there two nights. Would have done a third, but they are closed on Mondays. They have a web site so you can check it out.

We stumbled upon Antico Martini Ristorante, Campo Teatro Fenice, 2007, 30124 Venezia, Italy +39 041 522 4121, late (10:30 p.m.) one evening. The food was delicious (pasta, pizza, and seafood) and the outdoor setting magical (on a square near an old theater). Also, for lunch, we loved Ristorante Canaletto, Centro Storico calle de la Malvasia No. 5490, 30124 Venice, Italy 0415212661. The best pasta (tagliatelle) I had in Italy. Delicious pizza and seafood as well. Buon viaggio!

We just got back from a week in an apartment in Dorsoduro. I had been making lists of recommended restaurants and discovered to my delighted surprise that five of them were on the same street that runs by Campo San Barnaba and then by our apartment. We never had to walk more than a block or two to find a good place to eat. The street is Calle Lunga San Barnaba. We didn't eat on the square itself, so I can't tell you about the couple of restaurants there, but all of the ones we tried on the street were good. There's a Grom gelateria on the square, but there is a less expensive one just off the square. Note: we stuck to the pasta courses (Prima Piatti) as we're not big meat eaters.

We just spent a week in Venice and are now in Rome. Our favorite restaurants were Da Rioba, Anice Stellato and Pizzeria Vesuvio. All were in Cannaregio where we had an apartment. The first two had wonderful pasta and fish and the third is great pizza. It is reported to be the only restaurant in Venice that still has a wood pizza oven. All had lovely old trattoria style interiors, as well as tables outside. Vesuvio was the only one not on a canal. We also enjoyed a pizza restaurant under the Accademia bridge - more for the view than the pizza - but the pizza was ok, too. I don't remember the name, but you can't miss it if you get off the vaporetto at the Accademia stop. I found most of my recommendations from the Michaela Stibila(sp?) app on my iphone - Tap Venice. It is a very worthwhile app to download. The other recommendations I got on the SlowTrav website.
