We will be arriving in Venice on Sunday afternoon and leaving on a cruise Wednesday afternoon. This is our first trip to Italy. The obvious plan is to relax and enjoy at a leisurely pace Venice. But we are thinking about on Tuesday a Veneto Hill Town excursion that goes to Marostica, Bassano del Grappa, and Asolo. The towns look lovely, and I have come to appreciate the beauty of Europe's countryside. If we go, that would leave us in Venice with a few hours late Sunday, all day Monday, and about half a day on Wednesday. Anyone with experience touring the towns noted above? Any thoughts on taking the Veneto excursion or staying the entire time in Venice? All opinions would be appreciated.
My suggestion would be to stay in Venice the entire time. There is lots to see and do in Venice. the towns you have listed are quite lovely and if you had lots of time or had been to Venice a lot, I would suggest picking one and exploring on your own. But Venice is a wonderful and magical place and a day and a half is not really that much time to leave the islands and venture into the Veneto. If you get bored (not likely) take the day and go to Murano, Burano and Torcello.
I agree with Ron. There is much to do and see in Venice and you will not begin to cover it all in 1.5 days. There is no place else like Venice!
Ron and Janet, thanks for the responses. I expected your answers, and I suspect that this day-long excursion is trying to do too much too quickly.
Here's another vote for staying in Venice the whole time, especially if it's your first time there. Like I always say on this board - When in Venice, be sure to wander away from the crowds. A lot. Here are some pictures and a few video clips from our third(!) trip to Venice to illustrate that you really can get away from the hordes of tourists: Venice May 2011 Happy travels.
