Any changes needed?

I spent a lot of time working on the itinerary for my 2nd trip to Italy this coming October.... And now I'm wondering if I need to change it after reading many posts the last few days talking about how great places like Sorrento and Assisi are. This is what I currently have:

1 night Rome (because this is where I fly into and I've been before)
4 nights Sorrento
1 night Naples
3 nights Orvieto
2 nights Assisi
3 nights Florence (another place I've been before)
2 nights Milan

Is this pretty good? I could remove Naples and add that night somewhere else, and/or take away a night from Orvieto or Florence if I really need more nights elsewhere. In fact, I really wouldn't mind taking out Florence completely if there is somewhere that I should include in my plans. I've been to Stresa on lake Maggiore, Verona, Venice, Florence, Siena, and Rome. This time I want to go places I've never been.

Are you going to have a car or just travel by train? 3 nights in Orvieto might be a lot unless you have a car and go exploring Umbria. One day is enough for Orvieto and the next day you can catch the early bus to Civita and return to Orvieto in the afternoon.

If you've been to Florence and there isn't anything left you want to see I'd either drop it totally form this trip of just stay there 1 night to see some smaller sights. Have you been to Cinque Terra yet? You can swap Florence for that area. It is beautiful and you also have Santa Marghartia and Portofino close by.

You mention Lake Maggoire, since you are ending in Milan you can always add Lake Como instead of Florence too

It's just me for this trip, so I'm not going to get a car. Trains and buses only!

I'd love to see lake Como and Cinque Terre, but I wouldn't be getting to that area before November. Is it nice there in November? Anyway, it's always good to leave something for a future trip, and I know hubby dear would like to be with me in those places.

So less Orvieto and more Assisi, you think? There was a lot left to see in Florence since my last trip was very rushed. But again, it's always good to leave something for next time.

Assisi is beautiful and there's the little town of Spello one train station away. November can be tricky in Cinque Terre, if you haven't been to the Amalfi Coast you might enjoy that instead. If you give up Florence, consider Lucca or Arezzo, or both. Cortona and Gubbio are beautiful hill towns, Cortona is a little more convenient by train and/or bus.

I think one or two nights in Orvieto is adequate. It sounds like you want some new places. I've been to all of the places I mentioned, solo, by public transportation.

Have a great trip!

Thanks for the great ideas!

I have a great desire to see Volterra (and maybe San Gimignano). Should I stay there for a day or so, or maybe try to do it as a day trip from Florence? Can I easily do this by public transportation?

Another earlier version of my itinerary had me going to Ravenna and Venice. I took those out because Ravenna is a bit out of the way and I've been to Venice before. Loved it, though.

You can get to San Gim by bus from Florence but you'll change buses in Poggibonsi (probably spelled that wrong). You can get to Volterra by bus from Florence but you'll also need to change buses this time in Colle Va Elsa (again might be spelled wrong)
