Any advice on best ways to get from Sicily to Capri?

Hi, we're planning to visit Sicily and then Capri and Sorrento in July 2024.

Current plan is: (total of 8 nights in Italy but some will be just to get to the next stop)
* fly into Sicily (from London), spend 2 or 3 nights in Sicily
* then want to get to Capri and Sorrento, 4 or 5 nights between Capri and Sorrento
* then Rome to spend the night before a flight back to the US (not planning any real sightseeing in Rome, probably just a dinner and walking around that evening and then depart to the airport the next morning)

We were in Sorrento last year for a few days and did a day trip to Capri. We are thinking we'd like to spend at least one night on Capri (or maybe two) to have a more relaxed time there and enjoy it a bit more. (FYI, for anyone who'd be interested, we stayed in the Grand Hotel De La Ville in Sorrento last year. It was fabulous and we are hoping to stay there again this year.)

We will not have a car.
6 adults and 2 teenagers

Trying to figure out if there is an way to leave Sicily in the morning and get to Capri in the same day without having to spend a night somewhere else. Not really that interested in taking the overnight ferry if we can avoid that.

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions!

My advice would be to skip Sicily
2-3 nights is ridiculously short for that huge island and it will be brutally hot in July

Spend all your time in AC area, maybe give last 2 nights to Rome

I totally agree with Christine. 2 or 3 nights in Sicily is just plain silly. It's awkward to get to, it's worth a minimum of 2 weeks (and that's if you're willing to rent a car for part of the time), and you'd only have 2 non-jetlagged days if you spent 3 nights there. Please don't. It's a fabulous destination--but not, as already mentioned, in July.

If you must combine Sicily and the Capri/Sorrento area on such a short trip, I'd recommend flying unless you can find someone with recent experience taking the overnight ferry. (I've taken a few and not had any issues sleeping, but they're usually pretty basic.) EasyJet has quite a few non-stop flights from Palermo to Naples. EasyJet and RyanAir both fly between Catania (the larger airport) and Naples. Every now and then flights into and out of Catania get cancelled because Mt Etna is active. Both EasyJet and RyanAir are budget airlines, meaning you'll pay extra for the air you breathe. In addition, RyanAir is notorious for cash-grabbing gotchas, so it's essential to read all the rules on its website very carefully.

You can check flight schedules on the website skyscanner.com, but buy your tickets directly from the airline.

There are ferries from Naples to Capri and from Capri to Sorrento. There's a local train (Circumvesuviana) runing frequently from Naples to Sorrento, though the schedule appears to be unreliable. The Circumvesuviana is not air-conditioned, so in July you'd want to take the 4-times-a-day Campania Express instead.
