Any advance reservations to be made for Rome and Venice

Should we make reservations for the top highlights in these cities before we go to avoid standing in lines. I am going to book Vatican Museum tour, but other than that?

Thanks.

You must reserve for the Borghese Gallery in Rome, a top highlight. In Rome, you might want to invest in the Roma Pass. You will be able to enter the Colloseum (skip the line) and it is a free entry with the Pass. Also works as a transportation pass. It was well worth the cost. In Venice, if you plan to visit the Accademia, it will be easier if you have reservations. Also, the Doge's Palace in Venice is another site you might want to reserve. If you plan to use the vaporetto in Venice, it is a good idea to get the VeniceConnected card. Check out Rick's Italy guide for all the details. It is worth it.

For the Doge's Palace, you only need to book ahead for the Secret Itineraries tour, if you are planning to do that. It takes you to parts of the Palace that are otherwise closed to visitors. I took the tour in February and really enjoyed it. Bear in mind that the parts covered by this tour are neither heated nor cooled and are on the top floor under the metal roof. In the summer it will be VERY hot. In February everyone on the tour commented on [1] how cold it was and [2] how glad we were to not be there in summer.
