Another train question

I thought I had this all figured out. I bought my ticket from Rome to Orvieto. I'm certain that when I bought it at the automated machine, I chose a date and time, but when the ticket printed, that info was not on it. It just says its valid from 5/9-6/17. Why is this? Thanks, Meggan

I suspect it's just to give you a certain degree of flexibility, since these are fixed routes with invariable fares. Just make sure that if you decide to go on a different train it is the same type as the ticket for which you paid (Regionale, InterCity, etc.), so that you don't end up having to pay the difference in ticket price and possibly a fine when the ticket-checker comes by. Also, as you may already know, don't forget to validate your ticket before boarding the train.

And just to be clear, you are correct: you choose a date and time in the computer, but depending on the type of fare, it just prints you a sort of generic ticket for a range of dates. That's the way it does it.

Meggan, As Bryan mentioned, you'll need to be VERY careful to board the correct "type" of train. You can check the Trenitalia website to see the specific details on the trains that will be running on the day you want to travel. The ticket you bought is almost certainly for a Regionale train ONLY, so if you happen to board a EuroCity or whatever without a reservation, you'll probably be hit with a hefty fine. The ticket you bought can be used at anytime within the range of dates specified. Also as mentioned, you MUST validate the ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel (or again, hefty fines). Cheers!
