I decided to go to Lucca today instead of Siena. I managed to get my train ticket without help, but it was a regional train, so it stopped multiple times along the way. Is there a direct train back to Florence? Thank you!
Check on Trenitalia.com if there are trains called RV, IC or Freccia-something between Lucca and Florence SMN of Florence Campo di Marte.
RV is a Regionale (R) that makes less stops. The number of intermediate stops is displayed on trenitalia.com, click the small " i " next to the train code.
Incidentally, you have already taken a direct train. You are now looking for a no-stop train.
Sounds like a good opportunity for people watching. 😊
I enjoy people watching at the stations on the train from my suburb to Philadelphia. Italy is even better.
Liz, I think that’s how I’ll choose to see it since I’ve figured out how to get a ticket in the right direction, regardless of how many stops. I am loving this trip so much!
Excellent, KRS!
Enjoy the rest of your trip.
Lucca to Florence is only Regional trains. You could go to Pisa and catch a faster train (Regionale Veloce or even Frecciabianca) from there, but in the end you wouldn't save any time. Just bite the bullet and take the first regional train available. There are many throughout the day.
You can waste considerable money on some Italian train trips by insisting on a routing that includes one of the fast trains. You will certainly pay for that speed, but it may be of no ultimate benefit to you after you cool your heels for quite some time at the transfer point, waiting for the slower train that will actually stop in the town you want to see. I mostly look at total travel time and convenience of departure time. The total travel time will usually tip you off about a routing that includes one transfer more than necessary to get where you are going. Extra transfers can be a bit annoying if you have more than minimal luggage.
Download the Trenitalia app to your phone. You can check all opportunities there. You can do advance work as well. Always good to know when the last train back to home base is!
I have the Trenitalia app and figured out how to use it just to look at various times. I actually dropped my ticket while waiting for the train yesterday, but found it before I boarded. No one asked for my ticket or vaccine card either to or from Lucca though.
