Also have questions on this topic. We will be leaving Montalcino and driving to Orvieto. Will we have enough time to dirve from Montalcino, visit Civita, and be back on Orvieto by 12:30 or so? (Since it's Saturday, the car needs to be turned in before 1:00pm). We'll be spending the night in Orvieto so we'll have the afternoon and evening to explore Orvieto and then take the train to Rome the following morning.
Alternatively, we could leave Montalcino the afternoon before and spend the night in Civita. Any opinions on this option?

It's doubtful you can drive to Civita, take the bridge up to Civita and be back in Orvieto by 12:30. It may be possible if you left very early though. If you came down the afternoon before, you'd stay in Orvieto and run down to Civita early the next morning. Then come back to Orvieto to do your local tour. You can go on Mapquest or Google Maps to see where Bagnoregio and Civita are located SW of Orvieto.
