Another Newb question.

We are driving from Monteriggioni to Venice. Thats where we drop off our rental car and continue on with the rest of our trip. Is it feasible to even attempt to go to see Lake Como (Bellagio)on the way to Venice. I know its not a direct route. According to this google map Here >> Route on Map its about 4 hours to Como and then 3 to Venice from there. Also I see there are A LOT of toll roads. What am I looking at there as far as fees? Thank You in advance. Mike Just curious if its worth the time or should I save that for another time.

Lake Como area is beautiful. If it is wroth the time really depends on how much time you have to spend in the area. I liked Bellagio very much. But, it to see the area you really need a few days. So, I don't think I would drive up there for only a day, but if I had several days to spend I would go for sure. Lots of ferries in the Bellagio area so easy to get places from there and the rides aren't that long.

Not sure how much time you have, but if you are going to Venice and you want to see a lake, you should go to lake Garda, which is closer to Venice and not as much of a detour. Lake Garda is just as beautiful as Lake Como. Actually most Italians prefer Lake Garda to Lake Como, as a vacation spot, since it has better beaches, clearer water, and more things to see and do. If somebody offered me a week on a lake and gave me the choice between the two, I would choose Garda hands down, although both are beautiful. In your shoes even more so, since you are going to Venice. If you go, the most beautiful area of lake Garda is the North Lake where the lake narrows between the mountains. However Sirmione in the south is a pretty ancient town. Don't worry too much about freeway tolls. They are not that expensive. From Florence Impruneta freeway entrance (begin of toll for you) to lake Garda (let's say the Peschiera exit) is 16.70 Euro. Then from the lake (still Peschiera) to Venice is exactly 10 Euro. If you skip the lake and you go straight to Venice, the toll is 19.20 Euro total.
