My husband and I are going to Naples from Rome, probably Sept. 20-22, after which we'll go to Pompeii, Sorrento, Positano and Bari. We need a room for two nights, and I have looked at dozens of hotels in and around the city (we'd like someplace reasonably close to the train station, since we don't have a car) and overwhelmingly, the reviews on all of these hotels mention sketchy neighborhoods. I'm not looking to spend $200 a night -- or even $150 -- but I do want to be in a safe area, or at least an area that won't make me nervous while we're walking to and from the hotel. Any suggestions?
I stay in the train station area in Naples often, there are lots of hotels in that area. Look at booking.com for descriptions, reviews, prices, then look at google street views to see the area. Or take a taxi to the Chiaia neighborhood, pricier but has more of what North Americans expect.
Danielle, when I was in Naples in May, the area around the RR station seemed OK, although immediately in front of the station there was very major construction going on, a new metro line, I believe. That made the area not very appealing. I stayed at the highly-rated Orsini46 B & B, and it was WONDERFUL. Located a distance from the RR station, down by the bay, but I was able to walk everywhere in town, of course I love to walk and explore places. The building, which is at Generale Orsini #46, looks pretty ordinary from the outside, but the B & B is in a very nice apartment, where there are three lovely rooms, each with bathroom, plus the hosts' own apartment. My room (the Ischia room, as I remember) was very spacious. A delicious breakfast is delivered to your room at the time you request. The hosts are very friendly and helpful in guiding you to the best sites and good restaurants that suit your preferences. The room rates are well within your range, and they seem to still have space in late September. If you stay there, I would suggest taking a taxi from the RR station, as it will save you both time and hassle. One inside tip, given by my host Gabriele: forget the gelatarias listed in the RS book, the best gelato in Naples is at Fantasia! There is one downtown on Via Toledo, and another just outside the top of the funiculare which runs up from Chiaia.
Larry, thank you! This place is amazing. It is so beautiful...I can't even wait to show my husband. I want to book it right now! The Capri room is available, and my finger is itching to press "book now," seriously. The rate is pretty high per night ($144) but a splurge might be worth it, you know? Thank you for this recommendation!
So I'm still looking for a reasonably priced, safe hotel in the (general) area of the train station. My thinking now is that it's not as important as I previously thought it was -- we don't mind walking or taking a taxi, certainly, and especially if that means we wind up in a less sketchy area -- but I am coming up short. I have a few in mind, but I want to know: from the perspectives of people who have gone to, and stayed in, Naples, what is the safest (again, in your opinion) area to stay? I am trying to learn about the different neighborhoods, like Rome (a city I am familiar with) and pick the one that will get us the most access, while still being okay to walk to and from, probably at night. I realize that I am probably overreacting, but I'd like to not take too many chances.
