it is unclear to me which parts of Milan are taken up by the grounds of the Expo and pavillion...
can anyone familiar with the city explain what segments of the city (and which major attractions) have been subsumed by the monstrosity?

It's outside of town at Rho Fiera which is where all the big trade shows and conventions are held.

The Expo area is located north-west.
It is a former nondescript area squeezed between two motorways and a railroad yard. Nothing worth to visit nearby, unless you have to attend a convention / exhibition at the nearby Fiera.
