You are late. We already experienced a 6.3 a few minutes ago.

Is that 6.2 in addition to the 5.5, or was that an upgrade of the 5.5? USGS isn't showing anything newer than the 5.5 that hit earlier.

A 5.5 stroke at 7.11pm, a 5.9 at 9.17pm (this one was originally announced as a 6.2, but INGV has just redetermined it at 5.9). It looks like the second one was felt over a very large area.

(now it is 9.50pm, Italian time)

(almost real time measurements: https://twitter.com/INGVterremoti - remember to add two hours to UTC times)

USGS is reporting two earthquakes now, a 5.5 followed by a 6.0.

I noticed that on the news this morning. Hopefully these will be the last quakes for awhile.

lachera,

I hope you and your family are all OK.

So sad. I hope daylight brings at least fair news.

If anyone is interested, ShelterBox is an excellent relief organization. They provide boxes containing emergency shelter supplies and other basic needs. A RS tour-mate from Western WA who worked in Emergency Management said he felt they do a fabulous job. They provided Shelter Boxes for the last earthquake and are gearing up for relief for this one according to their FB page.

PS I don't work for ShelterBox.

Ken, I am in Florence where strokes are felt but are subdued. (But two days ago we had a local one, fairly strong). - And after all I was in Tokyo on March 11th, 2011 - it was a 9.0 and really incredible.

Lachera,

And after all I was in Tokyo on March 11th, 2011 - it was a 9.0 and really incredible.

I can't even imagine experiencing anything greater than a 6.8!

The Tokyo earthquake? I was in my hotel room at the 13th floor. Just imagine being in an airplane in a very severe turbulence - only it is not an airplane, it is your hotel room. Drawers opening, pictures falling from the walls, everything moving on its own. I am grateful to the superb Japanese engineering that makes buildings ready to swing - had we met anything like that elsewhere, we would not be here to tell the story.

It was a very weird evening. Sitting on the sofa in our Rome rental apartment, we felt the first tremor. A little later came the much stronger one. Neighbors opened their doors, we were all out in the halls speculating on whether a third tremor was coming, etc. But it didn't and everyone has forgotten it now.

it seems like the tremors are continuing. I'm watching RAI Uno at the moment, and they've just announced another 6.1 tremor in the last hour in the area around Norcia. Apparently this was even felt in Trentino. The current tremors have reportedly further damaged the Basilica of San Benedetto.

Now they are saying 6.6 for today's. We experienced one like that in Seattle ( it a very long one, 45 seconds) and it was pretty scary.

The 6.6 earthquake today was felt as far away as Salzburg, Austria.

As lacherla said, it was long and strong. It woke us up with a bed that was rocking and rolling. There is some very minor damage to a few sights in Rome, but in general tutto va bene. The worst of course is the ancient basilica in Norcia, one of the towns badly damaged in August. The church is now a ruin.

I visited Norcia on my trip to Italy in 1997. To see the photos of the church now is heartbreaking.
