Anniversary Dinner

Can you recommend a nice restaurant to celebrate our 22nd Anniversary in Venice, Vernazza (or anywhere in CT), Siena or Rome? We want to spluge once, but for our budget that may mean about 35-50 Euros per person.

Thanks!

My husband and I discussed your question--if it's restaurant you're going for we'd choose one in Rome. If it's romantic ambiance we'd choose Vernazza--one of the restaurants on the square. Congratulations of celebrating your 22nd anniversary--Italy is a great place to celebrate a special occasion.

We love really good food! Also like a nice atmosphere, however, our 17 year old daughter will be with us, so it won't be romantic, but more of a "great food" splurge.

Any ideas?

We had a fabulous meal at Trattoria da Monti near Termini in Rome. It is recommended on the NY Times food reviews and did not disappoint. And we found the prices to be extremely reasonable. Great food, outstanding and friendly service - and nice atmosphere.

"Da Ivo", a 10 min walk from St. Marks, in Venice, is small, intimate, a worthwhile splurge and serves the best Risotto I ever had. This may be the best restaurant in Venice, certainly for the money.

Like you, we're budget travelers so we usually stick to basic, good value restaurants so I'm not the best to recommend a splurge meal. For a nice meal we would consider restaurants like Tratorria Gianni on the square in Vernazza--we have a wonderful memory of sitting outside and having the best stuffed mussels ever. In Rome, we liked Trattoria da Lucia in the Trasterve neighborhood. Great food at a reasonable price in a nice setting--ones we'd return to but maybe not fancy enough for a splurge meal.

We are pretty simple people, so a spluge for us might just be ordering something we may not allow ourselves at other times. I just want to make sure it is really good, don't want to be disappointed.

In Vernazza, we had dinner at both Trattoria Gianni Franzi and Il Capitano. While we enjoyed Gianni Franzi, we preferred Il Capitano. And, while both were a bit of a splurge, Il Capitano was actually a bit less expensive.

If you want a real splurge in Vernazza, Gambero Rosso seemed to be the most expensive and to have a more exotic menu. But, we did not eat there, so I can't comment on it at all.

We stopped by the above mentioned Trattoria da Monti, but it was too early and they don't take reservations. The NYTIMES article that mentions it is "In Rome, a Place for Romans"..(sorry, i don't know how to do the www. stuff)...And it's not really near Termini, more downhill off r Cavour, heading towards Coluseum...Anyhow, menu looked good, in your price range, and nice neighborhood.
