Help! My son is trying to book his honeymoon to Rome and he is highly allergic to animals. He gets bad asthma. We were told that there are no animal free hotels in the region. Is this true?
marita, One of the more unusual questions we've had on the HelpLine! My best suggestion would be to contact any Hotels you're considering, explain the situation and ask if they allow animals in the rooms. I've never seen Pets inside Hotel rooms in Rome, but it's certainly possible that happens. Dogs are often allowed into restaurants in various places in Europe, so that could be another issue to consider. One question though. Some Hotels in this part of the world allow small Pets into rooms (often for an extra charge). How does your Son handle that situation? Be sure to pack adequate Ventolin (or whatever medication he uses). It might also be a good idea to have your Son's Physician provide prescriptions using a generic name for the med's, as the versions in Europe may be different. There are numerous Pharmacies in Rome, but I've had "language issues" on occasion. Your Son might consider joining This Organization which will provide a list of English-speaking Doctors in various places (including Rome), which will provide basic treatment for a set fee (if needed). Good luck!
Hi Marita. When I was searching for hotels in Italy, I looked at several B&B's and I noticed that several of the B&B owners had cats. I e-mailed a B&B in Rome & asked if the cats ever go into the rooms & they said that sometimes they do. So, I continued my search & finally stayed at an apartment in Rome which to my knowledge didn't allow pets into the rooms. My husband also gets severe asthma when he's around cats & dogs. I would suggest that your son e-mail each hotel/B&B, etc. & ask if there are pets in the common areas &/or allowed in the rooms.
I've stayed in hotels that explicitly say "No pets", so pet-less hotels do exist. Just be sure to check with the hotel. Although in all my visits to Rome I don't think I've ever even seen an animal in any hotel.
Make sure he brings his inhaler, etc. - to me, Rome = dust and fumes. Love it, but no one is sent there for their health.
