An Extra Day in Catania - Sicily

We are joining a RS Best of Sicily at the end of September which ends in Catania. We are adding four days on the front end for Cefalu and Palermo. I’m trying to decide if I should add an extra day in Catania and if so how should I use it? Suggestions appreciated.

I like a buffer after a busy tour before flying home, so I added an extra night and just wandered and rested. If your flight out of Catania is early morning an extra day might be good, too.

We did this tour last year. Here's an outline of our day in Catania (likely similar to what yours will be) -- arrived mid-morning, did a walk thru the fish market, had some free time (maybe an hour or so?) to walk down the pedestrian-only street adjacent to the market, then went to the Sicily Landing WWII museum. We were at the hotel by 2pm and then regrouped for drinks and the final dinner. My suggestion would be to look at the guidebook and online to see if there's something else you'd want to do/visit in town or as a daytrip worth staying an extra day.

Even in Sept it can be quite hot in Catania, as you can see paging thru the month at https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/italy/catania/historic?month=9&year=2023

I agree that an extra day is good for winding down from a trip. I had the following things to see in the city when we were there in 2018.

Catania - grand Piazza del Duomo & fish market
Piazza Carlo Alberto di Savoia - flea market (not on sunday)
Cathedral de Sant'Agata
Archeological complex, Terme della Rotonda
Anfiteatro Romano
Piazza Federico de Svevia by Ursino castle
Paticceria Savia, 302/304, Via Etnea - pastry shop. If it’s closed when you’re there, there’s another good one next to it.

None of the ruins will be as good as other places on Sicily.
