An early start in Venice

Hi!

We are very excited for our RS tour in October, Venice/Florence/Rome.

We’ll arise two nights early. Two questions
1. First Hotel I’d Pensione Guerrato. Looks nice and location great. Thinking of slightly nicer place for the early stay, nearby. Any ideas on where to stay?
2. Additional sites to see in those 2 extra days before the trip (not on itinerary): suggested by RS: Campanile di San Marco, Dalmatian School chapel, Jewish Ghetto, Santa Maria Della Slute, Guggenheim collection and Isle of Murano.

Any advise or recommendations of which to choose, or other suggestions?

Thanks,
Stu

Wouldn't it be easier to stay put in one hotel, instead of packing up and moving?

Stay at the Guerrato. Staying someplace slightly nicer before the tour will only result in time lost switching hotels. Let me know if you need short cut directions to Guerrato. Jewish Ghetto is quite moving.

I’d also stay in the same hotel so you don’t have to pack and move. Who cares about how nice the hotel is? Chances are you’ll be out exploring all day and see the hotel only to sleep. Venice is gorgeous and lively 24/7, who wants to stay inside the hotel?

  1. We've stayed at Pensione Guerrato twice and I wouldn't bother with anywhere else (unless you need or can afford to be right on the Grand Canal or Giudecca Canal). Perfectly located near Rialto and the Fish Market.

  2. I don't know what's on your tour itinerary, but my favourite out-of-the-way place in Venice is the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Its the island you can see from St. Mark's with the church on it. It has few crowds, a beautiful church, nice gardens to stroll through, and a working bell tower that you can climb to (a) see and hear the bell strike; and (b) get the best view of Venice.

The Campanile San Giorgio Maggiore also has an elevator. Costs less and has no lines like San Marco.
