From reading numerous posts on the subject, I realize that buying my needed train tickets once I get to Italy is fast and easy. However, I would really like to take advantage of the Amica fares to help reduce our overall trip costs. Are the Amica fares typically still available one to two days before the travel date? I am taking runs from Rome to Florence, Florence to Venice, and Venice back to Florence. I appreciate any advice. And, if I did buy online, I assume there is no "ticket stamping" to worry about?
Amica fares are available until midnight the day before you travel. The problem is....they are in limited quantity, so you run the risk of them being all gone before you get to Italy. If you purchase on-line, you can choose their "ticketless solution," either with payment receipt on board, or payment receipt via e-mail. In each case, you will get a confirmation e-mail with your "PNR." Show this e-mail to the conductor as proof of passage...no validation stamp required. If you have chosen payment receipt on board, the conductor will run off a little receipt on a printer and give it to you....either method will be fine. Remember, too, that IC trains are cheaper than ES trains...which in turn are cheaper than the new AV high speed trains. Going slower can save as much as 30 per cent. Register at Trenitalia FIRST, before booking. Wait for the confirmation e-mail with your password, then log back on ASAP, change your password to something you'll remember, then book.
Thanks, Norm. Great information.
We arrived in Rome June 3rd and went to the Americn Express office by the Spanish Steps. I was able to get Amica fares for three to Naples 2 days later and for Naples to Pisa 5 days after that. Both trains were ICPlus.
