I am traveling to Italy and will be using the train to get around. I plan on purchasing a few of the longer tips before I arrive and shorter ones once we are there. I purchased tickets for my husband and myself from the Trenitalia website and it said you could login or purchase without being registered. I was not registered before so tried to use the link to register with my drivers licence after the fact but it seemed as if it assumed I was Italian by the questions it asked so I didn't finish. I also tried with my passport as well. Since I am not a resident I can't use the discounted fares so is there any reason to register?

no reason to register. you won't be able to without and Italian address.
There are discount fares for non residents those Super Economy tickets.
