Does anyone know if American DVD's will fit into Italian made DVD players?

American DVDs will physically fit into the Italian DVD player, but you won't be able to play commercial American DVDs (movies/TV shows)because the region set on the disk and the player will block it. If your talking about a "home made" DVD you made with your camcorder/PC then the Italian DVD player will probably be able to play it as long as it is able to play both PAL & NTSC disks(most models these days will). You won't encounter any of the above hassles if you use a game console or PC to play the DVD.
