Amalfi vs Positano... I have a feeling we'll end up doing both on the same day as opposed to a day in each place because I HATE shopping, so I won't be wasting any time doing that. lol If we aren't going to shop, I don't think there is enough to do to fill up an entire day in each town. Am I right? I think 3-4 hours in each place will be enough... what do you think? The BIG question is : In which town do we have lunch? (we might do the other for diner, or head back to our home base of Sorrento - to be determined) Thanks in advance for your tips and opinions :)
Simone, Yes, 3-4 hours in each place should be enough. Also, you might want to check out Ravello. It is a small town up the hill. Only 20 minutes bus from Amalfi. Beautiful view. Have a good trip.

Simone, I don't know how you will be getting around but if it is the coastline bus, BE SURE TO LINE UP EARLY. Take the RS guidebook suggestion very seriously because if you don't take an early bus, you will not have time (even if you don't shop) to enjoy both Positano and Amalfi. I made a mistake by not getting to the bus before 10 and was unable to fit Ravello in. I also do not like to shop. The views from the top of the hill of Positano are phenomenal but the shopping aspect of the town kind of put me off. Sorrento restaurant suggestion: if you do end up having dinner in Sorrento, I highly recommend the Da Emilia family restaurant on the water at Marina Grande. Loved my two meals there. Linda
Yes to what previous poster said about getting on bus early. You can certainly do both in one day. If you do go to Positano, get off bus at second stop. We ate lunch twice at Bruno's, just a very short walk down hill from bus stop. I have since looked it up on Trip Advisor and it go so so reviews but we loved it. We were there on a beautiful day, ate great seafood pasta at tables on sidewalk with wonderful views, maybe it was the view and wine but we ate there twice. As for the rest of Positano, it was just shops and restaurants. The bus ride from Sorrento was awesome! I sat on side of bus away from driver and had great views. My daughter-in-law took Dramime and sat across aisle from me and hated it. We laugh about it as she rides roller coaster and I can't and yet it was one of best rides for me!! That said, three hours is plenty of time for Positano.
You can do both in a day trip. I don't know when you are going to be there, but Summer weekends get very busy on the road and traffic can often get bumper to bumper. There are lots of good restaurants in both places and even between them, for example in Praiano. I don't remember the names of many I've been to, also because it's been a few years since I went last. But go to tripadvisor and check the ratings. Maybe get the Italians' opinion by entering Italian key words: RISTORANTI MIGLIORI COSTA AMALFITANA or if you like fish:
RISTORANTI MIGLIORI DI PESCE A (enter name of town)
I love taking the ferry Lookig up at the striking cliffs and towns clinging to the edges and the deep blue water.
Amalfi is my FAVORITE place in the world.....Positano really doesn't do it for me.....but Amalfi I love because of the hiking behind it....there is a set of stairs (starts across from the paper museum behind a building, from the parking lot of what I think is a school) that lead into the mountains and a hiking trail after they end to the most beautiful wooded areas and my fav waterfall ever.....there are ruins of mills and old buildings and I LOVE it.... It takes about 45 min up, 20 min back, so many stairs, but with the hike, relaxing by the beach, and a trip to Ravello, that's a full day for me....
Thanks everyone! Much appreciated! great tips... can't wait to go!
