Amalfi vs. Ischia

Good morning,

Our travels in April 2026 will take us to the Amalfi Coast. At this point our itinerary has us on the AC for 4 days. We have three more days to play with. Should we use those 3 days to travel to Ischia or is it wiser to stay on the AC for those 3 days?

Ischia is a nice place to visit, but I'm not sure I would give it three days. A couple should be plenty.
I would look into Capri and see if you can ferry from there to Ischia.
Naples gets a bad rap, but I rather enjoy it. That is another option.

Not a whole lot to do in Ischia. I would second spending time in Napoli, a day or two in Capri as well.

3 more nights after staying on Amalfi? I would do Naples and daytrips, including going to Ischia on one :)

We stayed a week in Ischia and there was a lot we did not have time to see. So I strongly disagree with people saying that 3 days is too long!! For me, three days would be plenty for Amalfi...I think a perfect combo would be Ischia and Naples.

It is unclear to me whether April is "in season" for Ischia. I also worry about rough water for a long ferry crossing, and use of smaller boats in off-season. I personally had Positano as a must-see, but was VERY disappointed. It's true that Ravello is quite special, but it's also very small, and takes time to get to. OTOH, no one at home will ask you how you liked Ischia, they will ask about the Amalfi Coast.

You haven't mentioned Pompeii, Capri, or Paestum.

Good afternoon and thank you for all the replies.
I shouldn't be surprised with the split thoughts - as we all have different interests and expectations of our travels.

@ekscrunchy might you be able to say more about Ischia. You seem very convinced!

We land in Rome and spend 3 days and then head out the Cilento Coast ( Paestum) for a bike trip for the following 7 days. Then we go to the Amalfi Coast with friends for a day and a half before they head back home and we continue on for the days I have asked about.

We will be Naples for two days prior to flying back home out of Naples.
We have looked at Capri and in our reading it seems Capri is busier and more expensive compared to Ischia. The thermal pools are intriguing, the hikes along with the quieter pace

Having said this my spouse and I continue to ponder.

I could see the thermal pools being nice after a week of biking! If the alternative is staying on the coast, I could see the appeal in that, also, though it would depend on where on the coast. It would be nice if you don’t need to change accommodations again. Do you think you’ll want more nature time at that point in the trip?

Ischia is dreamy IF the weather is good. I'd been to the Campanian coast many times but my partner had not, so we planned to spend 5 nights on Ischia followed by three in Capri and two in Naples. We loved Ischia so much that we cancelled our booking on Capri and spent all our time on Ischia before taking ferry to Naples.

The problem with Ischia is deciding in which town to base. The bus is efficient and can take you around the island; you could also rent a small car (we planned to but scared the idea). I've stayed in Forio and in Ischia Ponte and would recommend the latter. IL MORESCO is a wonderful hotel with thermal baths and a thermal swimming pool.
But there are tons of hotels to choose from, in many price categories.

I wrote a report on another site about our time on Ischia; see if there's any info for you here, but do note the date, it's been years since we took that trip:

We also took a trip to Cillento so ask if you want more info about that region.
