I have just returned from a 10 day trip to Naples, Sorrento and the Amalfi coast. I can honestly say that this has truly been a dream trip. My daughter is a teacher in Dubai and met me at the Amsterdam airport and we traveled together from that point. We found the Italians to be wonderful, warm people who seemed to truly enjoy meeting and talking with us. The food defies description. I've never enjoyed such wonderful food in my life. The Amalfi drive is breathtaking. We were fortunate to enjoy a meal at the very historic Hotel Rufolo in Ravello. We found Capri to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. It's helpful to be in good physical condition when visiting the Sorrentine peninsula. We probably walked about 10 miles a day up and down very steep, cobbled streets. Be absolutely certain you have an excellent pair of well broken-in walking shoes AND good socks. (I wore Thorlo socks and recommend them highly. They were worth every penny). I also encourage you to just go out and start walking and discover and appreciate the sights you happen upon along the way. We ate at the Mayflower restaurant and Fauno right on the Piazza in the center of Sorrento. Magnificent food and a good place to sit outside and absorb the atmosphere. The architecture is amazing. The place is dripping with wisteria and other beautiful flowers. We did not encounter any pickpockets or thieves anywhere and we did not see a speck of garbage anywhere along the way either. The exchange between the US dollar and the Euro is very scary but I thought prices were reasonable everywhere. It made me wonder if some of the prices hadn't been adjusted to make the trip more affordable for Americans. It was one of the best trips I've ever had the pleasure to make.
