Amalfi to Rome for Return flight (same day)?

Hello,
My husband and I are planning our first 14 day Italy trip, 2 nights Venice, 4 nights Rome, 4 Sorrento and 4 Amalfi. Our return flight is however from Rome. We were thinking of taking a taxi (which the hotel is able to provide) from Amalfi to Salerno at 6:30am and then catching the 7:15 train for Rome. Getting in for 9:30. This should gets us to the airport at 10:15, at least 3 and a half hours in advance for our 1:45 pm flight. My question for those who have traveled in the region, is this too close? Should we plan on staying in Salerno overnight instead to catch the train, or head to Rome the day before, cutting short our Amalfi stay by 1 night? Thank you for any help you can provide. We are looking to avoid traveling on multiple days, so thought the same day to Rome may work out.

How risk-averse are you? It looks okay on paper, 6.30 am, no major traffic hassles on the coastal road, then trains which are usually on time and reliable, plus a little cushion from Rome to the airport (2.5 hours is probably enough). On the other hand, if something goes awry (rail strike, for instance), you are up a creek - even with a super-expensive oar (taxi), the traffic is likely to be bad because of the strike. . . .

If you are going to change hotels for your last night, might as well go to Rome and be close to the airport - that's my feeling.

Or change your itinerary, go from Venice to Sorrento via Naples (either train or fly), then Amalfi, and Rome last.

Absolutly agree with what was said before. The best solution so you don't "loose" a night, as mentionned, is to finish your trip in Rome.

If it was me I would not want to be "stressed out" trying to get the airport this way. All you need is a rail strike, operational problem with tracks where they put you on the bus part of the way or other "acts of god" to put you behind schedule. I would stay in Rome near Termini Station or at the airport.

I agree with Chani, rearrange your itinerary so that Roma is your last stop; one less night in Sorrento or Amalfi will give you the extra night in Roma. Much more efficient to have all your nights in Roma at once.

Unfortunately I am sort of stuck with going to Rome after Venice, we have friends / family joining us there for 4 days for those specific dates. So right now either we return for the one extra day on the 25 to Rome, or we stay in Amalfi as I previously indicated above. I agree it's stressful, and from what I am reading the suggestion seems to be to just go to Rome the day earlier, rather then try our luck and hope for the best :)

Head back to Rome the night before have dinner stroll around and get to the airport in style. Do 3 nights in Rome on way in last night on way out. Enjoy!

Month of the year? Sorrento and Amalfi book up months in advance. It is an unsound plan to sleep on the Amalfi Coast the night before a 1:45PM flight from Rome. Reflecting on your itinerary needs does not change that fact. People go to the Amalfi Coast because it is isolated.

It's your vacation, but I would not skimp on two nights in one of the most magical cities of the world, and then spend 4 nights in Sorrento and 4 nights in Amalfi. There is "enough to do" in Sorrento, but it's a bit banal. (You didn't mention Pompeii and Herc.) There is not enough to do in Amalfi, and the stone beaches are, to me, unattractive. I don't swim in the central Mediterranean, anyway.

I would point out that a 1:45 departure means you could sleep the last night in Rome, not needing an "airport area" hotel. That means that the night is not "a waste." You will not have seen all of Rome in 4 nights, believe me.

Edit: Have you ordered your Borghese Gallery tickets yet?

We have booked all our hotels ( though we ensured to pick the free cancelation options just in case), with the exception of the last night which I plan to do today. We are going next month, May. We have decided based on everyones suggestions (thank you!), we will head to Rome early on 25 for the extra day and do some more sight seeing. I plan to book a hotel for the extra night in Rome today. Any suggestions for something close to the station? We did not buy our tickets for the Borghese Gallery yet, so we could plan that for the 25. We do plan to do day trips to Pompeii and Herc from Sorrento, along with Capri and Positano. We don't get to Sorrento till 6 PM, so it's realistically three days there. From Amalfi we planned day trips to Ravello and Salerno/Pasteum day trips. We also were planning on doing a 'path of the gods' hike time/will permitting.
