Amalfi to Rome

What is the best way to get from Amalfi to Rome. Can we catch a train from Salerno or Sorrento? Also, we are going in July....should we book the train ahead of time or get the tickets there?

We did that trip a few years ago. We walked into a travel agency on the Amalfi street that is very close to the beach and got our reservations. No need to do it from here. You take a bus from Amalfi to Salerno. The agent figured out for us which bus to take to get there in time for our train. As I recall, the bus lets you off a couple of blocks from the station. It wasn't hard to find.

Amalfi is in the middle between Sorrento and Salerno. You can take the SITA bus from Amalfi to Salerno and then take the Trenitalia train from Salerno to Rome. If you took the SITA bus to Sorrento, you are still looking at a 1hr ride on the private Circumvesuviana train to Naples and then the Trenitalia train to Naples.

Another option is to take the ferry from Amalfi to Naples, take a taxi to the train station (or walk about a mile) and then take the train to Rome.

Last, you will be going to Amalfi from somewhere. I suspect Rome. You will be taking the reverse of what I explained above to get there. You can get your exit train tickets when you buy your tickets to get to Amalfi. No need to buy before you leave. Lots of trains out of Rome. Also, if you ride the Circuvesuviana train, you won't be able to buy them in advance anyway.

We will be flying into Naples, not coming from Rome. But thanks for all the great advise. I really won't worry about tickets until I get there. This helped. Thanks again
