Amalfi Sample Itinerary

I have 1 week to split between the Amalfi area & Rome (Wed. to Wed.). Never been to Amalfi, but many reviews say I only need 2-4 days.
A sample day to day itinerary would be great.

wayne you gave no information upon which to hang an answer. Have you been to Rome before? Campania? What do you like to do and see? When is the trip? How many? The more you tell us, the more tightly you phrase your questions - the better and more precise the possible answers...

Hi Nigel, Yes I have been to Rome & north Italy. Never been to the south. Originally I was planning on Palermo, but I realized that would be too much, hence the compromise of the Amalfi area.

What time of year are you going? How many are traveling with you? Will you be flying in and out of Rome or can you do "open jaw" tickets to arrive in Naples and depart Rome (or vice versa)?

Mid January, in & out of Rome, 2 people.
My wife recently injured her foot, so probably not as much walking as usual, if possible.

Hmmm ... even though Positano is probably my favorite place in Italy, IMO the Amalfi Coast is not a good choice for mid-January with an injured foot. If you don't want to stay in Rome all 7 days (which I would at that time of year and with her foot issue), I would choose a different destination - one that is conducive to public transport or that doesn't require alot of walking or climbing (hence staying in Rome all week).

Yes, Positano is great but not with an injured foot at all as is all walking up and down hills, same for Pompeii, not hilly but lots and lots of walking on uneven cobblestones.

The Amalfi Coast in January can be a little dreary or quite beautiful, depending on weather. If you really want to go there on this trip, you could stay in the town of Amalfi, which is near the sea level (steps to the cathedral would be a problem if you want to see that). Frankly I'd stay in Rome and take a daytrip to Ostia Antica and/or Orvieto (the main piazza area around the Duomo is flat and you can take a city bus from the funivia up to the main piazza).
