Amalfi question vs Sorrento

Anyone have thoughts on staying 3 nights in Amalfi instead of Sorrento? We've been to sorrento before and returning to the amalfi coast next june. Yeah doing early planning just for there with the summer season. It's not covered much in Rick's book so seeing opinions on staying there. One day we'll ferry to capri, another day try some hiking possibly up to Ravello. There is 4 of us so we're going to get a drive to and from Naples train station to either town. Being prime summer season is it better to day trip from Sorrento or stay in Amalfi?

Since you have already stayed in Sorrento, and have no need for its convenient transport to Pompeii, I would for sure stay in Amalfi, or anywhere else along the coast that has ferry access. I don't see any advantage to having to come all the way from Sorrento each day when you can do the Capri trip from Amalfi. I like little Atrani, adjacent to Amalfi but slightly tucked away in feeling.

We stayed in both Sorrento and Amalfi and enjoyed them both very much
Would definitely go back to either

When we were on the Amalfi coast last spring our driver pointed out that Amalfi is always so crowded with tourists because it's the the only place on the coast the big buses can park. Maybe something to consider.

We just returned from Amalfi side (stayed in Furore which is b/t Positano and Amalfi town). Would def recommend Amalfi as it's an easy bus to Ravello or ferry to Capri.

Yes, the buses come to Amalfi. But in June the whole Coast is crowded. I would suggest using Amalfi as a base. I stayed at a wonderful small hotel - 7 large rooms, some with sea views, others the mountains - away from the crowds. It's called Villa Annalara and is owned by two brothers who could not do enough to make my stay enjoyable. There is a large terrace overlooking the city of Amalfi and the sea. Perfect for an apertivo after a long day. It's a short walk to the buses and ferries.

Instead of of getting off the train in Naples, it would be faster to take it to Salerno and get a driver (or ferry) from there. Most likely substantially less expensive either way.
