Hi all flying into Naples and want to go to the Amalfi coast (AC). Will have two kids 1 and 6 years of age. Best places to stay? I was thinking 3 days in sorrento then taking ferry to AC and staying in positano with a day trip to Amalfi. Open to suggestion and recommends of which hotels/areas are great.
With two children, I would not want to stay in Positano because of the steep hills. It is a pretty city best viewed from the sea. I would stay in Amalfi and use it as a base to visit other locations on the coast.
When is this trip? Lodging books up way in advance. I'd suggest doing research on booking.com, then come back here once you have narrowed available options down.
Positano is not the best place to stay, as transportation options aren't great, and the town is all steps- can you carry the one year old the entire time? In addition, Positano is mainly high- end shopping, and the beach is all pebbles.
Perhaps consider staying in Sorrento and then Salerno. Are you flying out of Naples?
Be prepared for intense crowding if you'll be there between April and October. Moving about takes time and patience, due to the poor transportation infrastructure. However, if you plan for the realities on the ground, you can have an incredible family trip !
Is your trip just to see the Amalfi Coast? Because Sorrento is not on the AC, but it's a a great base for day trips to the Amalfi Coast, Capri and also north to Pompeii. Having said that, Pompeii and Positano are not stroller friendly. Amalfi Town would be my choice if your primary goal is to stay in the AC. I can't recommend a hotel there though as we spent our 2 weeks in the region in Sorrento because of the transportation options to everything we wanted to see.
Month. Year?
Are you counting on beaches?
What area are you from (for beach experience and children's entertainment reasons.)
Where are you flying out of, or what is your next stop on the trip. (Amalfi Coast is not well connected to many other places.)
Are you looking for economy locations and food? Is Airbnb a must for your family?
Going June for my birthday. Only doing the south of Italy. Really want to enjoy the beaches good food and relaxing.
I believe both Minori and Maiori have sandy beaches and ferry access
Both would be more kid friendly Positano (steep steps everywhere small rocky beach)
If you are flying out of Naples you will need to stay IN Naples night before departure (true for any AC location)
Another option is Salerno
Do some forum searches -there are a lot of Salerno fans here and many threads with info
