Here is my dilemma. I only have a few days in Sorrento. I am hoping to arrive before noon in Sorrento and would like to take the bus to Positano and Amalfi that afternoon. Which bus would I take and is it something that can be done. I only have the afternoon and evening on the day I arrive in Sorrento or the day after I arrive in Sorrento (again afternoon and evening) to see these areas. Can this be done? I have other excursions planned that are must sees and do not want to take away from them. However, I am hell bent on seeing the Amalfi Coast and Positano that I need to know how I can go about doing it. Would it be easier to just travel by bus to Positano and Amalfi and then take a ferry back from Amalfi to Sorrento? Please help! Thank you.

Buses between these towns are frequent and run all day, so your plan is rushed but doable. Here's a link to the bus schedules: http://tinyurl.com/3zaawlp The ferry stopped running October 8th - yesterday - it's closed for the winter season.

Note that Positano clings to a steep hill sloping down to the beach. The bus s you at the top and from there it is all stairs down and up. For me , Positano looks great from the ferry and the beach and fleetingly from the bus (provided that you have elbowed your way into a coastline view seat) but in between I found it to be a narrow winding maze of alleys and trinketeers. I liked it but I would rather be in Ravello just upthe hill from Amalfi. Ravello is jaw ing spectacular. If it is in your budget, then hiring a driver for 1/2 day will allocate lots of your limited time toward seeing cool stuff and away from waiting for the bus and pondering schedules or waiting for a bus in the dark. The driver will fetch you whenver you want and take you to whatver next site you want. You will able to cram in a lot more but with no hassle factor. And the driver will know the towns very well.

The bus ride Amalfi-Ravello is ~15 min more or less. All Amalfi buses do/pu in the big parking lot on the waterfront. If you don't see Ravello then you will have a great reason to return, which is a good thing. Have a great trip!

Agree, loved Positano but if only had one choice would definitely go to Ravello. Positano is about one hour by bus from Sorrento, buses leave from train station, Can't remember how much further for Ravello. Be sure to get seat on bus away from driver for best view and on same side as driver on way back. It is a long day but well worth it, views are special.

With the private driver that I have hired we are going to Positano and Ravello as well. So I am looking forward to this trip. I figured in the end the money spent was well worth the service and sights I will get to see. Thanks for all the input!

My wife and I just got back from staying in Positano for 3 nights...we miss it already. One of the most amazing places on earth in my opinion. there is magic in the air there!! I love Positano.
