We are traveling to Amalfi early October and looking to go to Paestum from Maiori (where we are staying part of our trip). Any recommendations on how best to travel to there?
Private driver, ferry?
Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Check ferry options to Salerno, but it is also fairly painless to get to Salerno's train station by bus, and then take the train straight there. In the past, there was no ticket machine at Paestum, and I was advised to buy return tickets in advance.
If you hire a driver, you can also visit a bufala mozzarella farm/factory, so that is worth considering.
Take the Sitabus to Salerno. Catch either the bus or the train from Salerno to Paestum.
In the Spring I visited Paestum by train from Salerno. There is indeed no one selling tickets in Paestum, although there is a ticket machine. If you do take the train you might want to purchase round trip tickets. I prefer not to risk a faulty machine which is the reason I purchased round trip tickets in Salerno. Paestum is a remarkable site and since the entry ticket includes the Museum (no separate tickets available), do take the time to visit there as well (across the street from the temples). Just to say that Paestum is indeed worth a visit, though it's not the easiest place to get to. There are a few nice & afforable places to eat in town, and a public campground FWIW.
I see that it's also possible to visit on a half-day boat tour!
How could it be easier to get to? You just step off a train and walk less than 10 minutes into the site!
