Amalfi in October???

Hi, we are planning on 2 weeks in Italy next October, mid month. We will be flying into Rome and spending about a week in florence but first we were thinking of spending some time exploring the Amalfi coast. I've heard lots of stuff starts closing down there in October. Is this true? If so maybe we will direct some of our time further North and fly out of Venice. Thoughts?

I have no experience with the Amalfi area in October, but I want to caution you about flying out of Venice if you would be returning to the US or Canada. Others on this forum have reported that Venice departures connecting to North American flights tend to be very, very early in the morning, often requiring costly airport transportation. I'd suggest checking airline schedules from Venice to your intended destination before committing to that departure point. Milan might work if you end your trip in northern Italy, however.

Mid-October in the Amalfi area is still nice weather and a good time to go.
Nothing will be closed then. Less tourists than in Sept but will still be crowded in that region.

I have stayed in early to mid October and you definitely got bad info if anyone says that is a slow time or that anything at all is shut down. The ferries may not run if there is stormy weather at sea but that could happen any time of year.

Acraven, thanks. I've always flown out of Venice and it's a direct flight for me, leaves after 11am, so I'm good on that end. Mreynolds, thanks for the input!

Positano on October 18 had fabulous weather, quite warm. Everything was open, restaurants by the sea, all the shops, etc.

I was in Sorrento, Positano, and Capri two weeks ago for a total of 4 days. The temps ranged from mid 60s to mid 70s most of the time, and we had a few days of rain. If I could do it again, I'd go in September instead of October to have a lower chance of rain/cooler days.

Thanks everyone. I'm still trying to make up my mind which way we're going to go with this trip. All the info is helpful.

We were in the Amalfi coast area last week. A bit of rain here and there, but nothing to stop us from doing what we wanted to do.
We visited Ravello, Amalfi and Sorrento and nothing was closed down. A LOT of tourists still around.

I suggest you use the local bus to get around on the Amalfi Coast. It's cheap, less nerve-wracking than driving and everyone gets to enjoy the fabulous views! We stayed in a small village overlooking the town of Amalfi. We thought we would drive down to the town and explore a bit, but after attempting to find parking in three different lots, the decision was made to use the local bus. Best thing we did!

I'm currently on the Amalfi Coast and weather is amazing. People were swimming today in Amalfi. It's been warm in the afternoon and cool inthe mornings and evenings.

I can't imagine coming here during high season when it's more congested. I don't know how the roads handle it! The great thing about traveling now is that it's much less expensive-at least for lodging!

Thanks everyone. I've rule out Amalfi for this trip. I feel like it should be a whole other trip in early september sometime. Maybe combined with some other southern Italian cities.
