Amalfi Hotels - RS offers none

Wow, no recommendations in Rick Steve's book, what to do? Developing itinerary for October 2020 and chose Amalfi for proximity to hiking trails and ferry access, after 2 or 3 days in Sorrento. Any current hotel recommendations?

Use any of the hundreds of other resources? I like Booking.com. I search for location and amenities I want (in this case, a view/balcony would be important, but enter any things you find important).

I am using those sights for research, but was wondering what the forums expertise might be
. I guess I should have said, moderate prices!
Thank you for your response

Yes, you will no doubt get some specific suggestions, but then you might be disappointed if you search those places and they are already booked or don't meet any of your other requirements, so I always just search by date so I only see what is available (the AC can book up well in advance, so even for October I'd book as early as you can). Best to give your specific budget in Euros as well.

If there’s any chance you’d be interested in a home (or apartment) away from home, complete with a kitchen and maybe even a washing machine, check out www.vrbo.com . A range of prices there, including some real bargains!

FYI, Rick took his Amalfi town hotel listings out of the book because (on his last visit) he considered them "too greedy" - which I understood to mean a bit overpriced and/or wouldn't offer an RS reader discount.

And not to dis Rick at all but, to my knowledge, we've never stayed in an RS recommended hotel and have never been stuck with a truly bad one. Use booking.com to filter your search by dates, desired per night $ and amenities, and read the reviews carefully; what bothers some folks may not be a bother to you and vice versa. Also use TripAdvisor to see candid shots taken previous guests.

We stayed at Hotel Bussola, seems to me it was listed in RS (but maybe an older version)
Anyway it was very nice, great location and the balcony view was lovely.

I don’t necessarily think RS recommendations are always the best or only places to consider
use booking.com

Ellen, if you work hard with the Search box top center, you can find a decent number of high-end and budget accommodations that have been recommended by posters on these boards. Many people favor Sorrento, not on the AC, because it is better for daily daytrips. So there are more recommendations for Sorrento. If you are familiar with the way to "exercise" a Search Engine, you will get a lot more data than one post from you here can produce.

Another place you might consider is Atrani, a 20-minute walk from Amalfi, also smaller and more peaceful.

Just a heads-up on using booking.com, which I use extensively. At this time of year, many hotels have not released rooms to b.com for the following year; and/or they have not yet set their rates. When that is the case, they show up “no rooms available.” Don’t panic, thinking the AC is getting filled up 10 months ahead.

We’ve stayed in 11 RS recommended hotels and 4 were beyond awful so i stopped using his recs. We always use Booking.com now and have been extremely happy with every hotel. By reading the reviews, you get great, current, very useful feedback.

We stayed 2 nights in Amalfi just a couple of weeks ago: Hotel L'Antico Convitto. Room was lovely. Breakfast was first class. Located a short distance from the Duomo and main piazza. And a good elevator for relief from the stairways in Positano & Cinque Terre! The owner/manager lives on premises and was extremely helpful with area suggestions. Booked through hotel web site for 86 euros a night, breakfast & taxes included. Over the years, we have stayed in RS recommended places that were very good, good and so-so. We have also stayed in places selected through HomeAway/VRBO, booking.com and just stopping by that were very good, good and so-so. Maybe if our budget was richer, we could get very good places consistently. But it ain't.
