Hello - looking for recommendations for one day to maximize our stay in the Amalfi port. We have only one day before moving on to Sorrento where we will visit Pompeii.
Appreciate any recommendations!
Thank you!

The best thing about Amalfi for us was visiting Ravello, above it. Half-hourly (?) bus service may make getting the last tender back to the ship risky - you should obviously visit Amalfi "last" so you can return to the ship before they sail. IF the ship offered a bus excursion to Paestum, I would have a strong interest, myself. That cannot be safely and affordably done on your own from Amalfi. And it can't be reasonably done from Sorrento.
Some people would want to see Positano, just because it's more famous than Amalfi. But it's risky by public bus (I mean, on your own from a cruise ship.) In truth, Ravello is just as exclusive a destination, but it has no shoreline. You should check whether your cruise date overlaps the summer music festival in Ravello, which will increase crowding in a crowded (in summer) area.
The first time we ever went to Europe, we ended it with a cruise around Italy. Since then, we've been back a few times to see the places we loved although we haven't yet gotten back to the Amalfi coast, mostly because we just love Rome and always seem to prioritize it! :)
So are you looking for activities for the day?
What we did on our day on the Amalfi coast is rent a boat. I knew the crowds on land would make the experience less enjoyable for me, and I also tend to get motion sickness on windy roads so a taxi tour up and down the coast didn't appeal to us. But we had the BEST time renting a small motor boat and sightseeing the area that way. We went swimming and motored around the little islands off the coast. It was perfect.
Where on the Amalfi Coast does your ship dock? I thought cruise ships docked in Naples?
Suki, they're not docked, they're anchored and passengers are tendered in. In the past three years we've seen them off Salerno, Amalfi and Sorrento and even Naples. The ports of Naples and Salerno can't handle the increasingly large number of cruise ships.
Yes, we are tendered.
Thanks for your recommendations, greatly appreciated!
The bus would be in the Piazza right by the water - you should see the buses and the lines....
And definitely ask at your cruise excursion desk - they should have some info for land activities on your own.
Both are simple to do on your own. But if you feel unsure, look at Get your Guide, Visitacity, and With Locals as well as airbnb experiences. There are numerous people who can be a shore guide for you !
There is a website "Whats in Port" that might be helpful.
Not all ships use tenders ... and not all ships are mega ships. The Princess ship we were on in 2016 was 650 passengers and docked in Salerno.
Thank you! And we are on s smaller ship <700 passengers!
warfies, it didn't occur to me that you might have meant "Amalfi Coast" when you wrote "Amalfi". Which town will they be tendering you in to?
It’s actually Positano. Thanks for making me pay closer attention!
